I’m looking at a vehicle that seems to have very low mileage for the year, 98 with 46000 miles. I was warned that they could have changed the mileage. Can they even do that? If so is there a way to tell?
Is there a way to tell if the mileage has been tampered with on a used vehicle?

it does sound low, but perhaps it’s genuine,
does it have a service history and how many owners has it had, what vehicle is it
are you in the uk ?
if so you could get an m.o.t. history (there will or should be seven) on the vehicle to check what mileages were on the vehicle at each test and if it failed on anything that may seem untoward on a low mileage vehicle.
yes if u look at the wear on some stuff like the pedals, seats, and gear stick. if its realy worn, dirty or old you no its not only gone 1000 miles
Most cars now days have Digital odometers. If so, It is almost impossible to alter the mileage. If it has the old mechanical odometer, then Yes it is possible to set the mileage backwards. Can you tell us the make and Model? One way to tell is to ask to see any old service records. They will all have the current mileage on them and if it is higher then what is on the vehicle now, It has been changed.
If your vehicle is newer…..it should have an ECM (Electronic Control Module) basically an internal hard drive……. that has life of engine / car mileage…..you can also contact the Consumer Affiars bureau for your state and they should be able to tell you…..There are plenty of used car dealers doing federal time for rolling back odometers…..so to answer your question YES there is a way and there are means to check……
compare engine wear to the amount of miles and ask about recent repairs to the vehicle
The real giveaway for a ‘clocked’ speedo is if the numbers are not level it has been altered.
yes their is away to tell this most vehicles now have a memory chip in them and it also records the mileage of the vehicle, this can be found through a dealer with a tool they hook up to it,you can also look at things like the pedals but those can be changed,to match the mileage,if the dash was out of it you can check to see if the tamper proof seal was broken on it that’s a good way to find out,and there’s lot of people really good at changing the mileage around on those, some never get caught either, good luck.
